本节曼昆举了一个例子（能生产肉的牧场主和能生产土豆的农场主如何建立贸易）用以说明分工合作和贸易比各自为政更有效率且使双方都能获得更大好处。通篇都是对这个例子的分析说明，这其中运用了我们在上一章中所学到的生产可能性边界曲线，还有多个表格进行数据分析，其实相对而言结论倒并不重要（我们已经事前知道了），重要的是这种实证的分析方法，将问题量化，使用数学工具和逻辑推理，最终得到一个理性的结果，显然这样的推论过程远比凭感觉要可靠的多。
